Hmmmm, gee, I thought I was living in a gun friendly community which Chatham County is. You have the right to own a firearm in Chatham County. Many, many do, some are gun collectors, most not. Most of the people living in Chatham are law abiding, know how to handle a gun and not stupid.
I remember way back, (almost thirty years ago) when there was a run on buying hand guns by women in Chatham. Why, because someone, one or two in a car, were pretending to be law and pulling single woman driving at night over. For the purpose of rape/assault. From what I understand they were never caught. It stopped when the news reported the run on gun sales by women.
I remember way back before that when a TV program had a special on gun ownership pro and con. At one point they showed a very pretty young blond woman practicing at a gun range. She had been anti gun until her friend was raped and beaten in her own home. If her friend had a gun and was trained to use it, it would not have happened. She had been asleep in an upstairs bedroom. Heard breaking glass noise, picked up the phone to call police, it was not working, the line had been cut. She stayed in her bed terrified and unable to act. That young blonde said it was not going to happen to her. I believed it. She took charge of her own safety. And most important, got the right training in the use of a gun.
The law can not protect you 24/7. There are people out there who are predators. Be aware of what is going on around you and pay attention to your hunches.
So training how to react, how to shoot is important in gun ownership and in my opinion because it would be less lightly your gun would be used against you. Getting a gun license, I feel, should include showing the ability to use it properly and that you can hit a target. Like getting a license to drive a car. Both kill.
