Subject: old growth forests
There are no real old growth forests in this area. I realized this when I was in England and stayed at Sherbourne Castle. The trees there made our trees look like saplings. (I use to think the forests in Asheville were old growth). One early morning walking the grounds at Sherbourne. with the mist heavy on the trees, it was like being back centuries in time. An incredible experience I will always treasure which also showed what had been here that I had not known. What old growth really was. I do believe we (usa) have a pine tree that is centuries old out in the west. Protected from humans of course, by not giving the exact site.
I also remember being taught in school the dangers of clear cutting. The erosion mainly as well as other things. One time driving from South Carolina into North Carolina in a vehicle that had no air conditioning, I felt the difference in trees vs no trees. On that SC highway there were no trees lining the highway until we crossed the State line. The North Carolina side was heavy with trees and the immediate relief from going to hot sun to shaded roadway struck me. What a difference it made and makes. To our lives.
