Bear,

I am “reading between the lines†so please correct me if I am not describing your reason for posting. I think you are seeing the effects of different character sets being misinterpreted by Microsoft Word (Which is what I suspect Gene is using to run posts through for the Chatlist, ultimately ending up in Dreamweaver, Sitemaker or some other web based publishing system that sends the compiled postings to the whole mailing list).

Most ASCII characters translate fine, but MS Word has a peculiarity which mistranslates characters such as quotation marks, apostrophes, asterisk etc. into nonsensical characters such as â€â€

I believe this peculiarity can be solved by Gene turning off a Microsoft Word feature called “Replace as you Type” before composing the source document. Not sure there is much you can do on your end without effort that probably does not justify the reward.

1.            Click the File tab and then, under Help, click Options.
2.            Click Proofing.
3.            Click AutoCorrect Options button.
4.            Click Autoformat As You Type tab.
5.            Uncheck all the boxes in the first section, Replace as you type.
6.            Click OK

Tony et al –

Per my earlier response to Tony, I do not use Word in compiling the Chatlist.

See Jack Stevens’ post below.

I do ask folks to send their emails into the Chatlist in plain text.
If I have the time I try to clean up the posts. Some are so full of coding, that I just send them back to the Chatlist member and ask them to resubmit in plain text.
