May we judiciously recognize that none of us can speak for “the interests of the citizens of Chatham County and Pittsboro.” Those interests are too varied, a little different for each of us, and even different within each of us. The best we can do is strive to balance the tradeoffs between private property rights and how each of us affects our neighbors.

When we were few and had more space between us, we could “do our own thing” more easily without harming our neighbor’s opportunity to do the same. But we also lacked each other’s support in common ventures, such as, for example, a fire department. As we become more crowded we have more rules as we are more likely to bump into each other when simply waving a friendly greeting.

In writing on the Chatlist where we don’t have the benefit of tone of voice, or eye contact or a smile we choose our words even more carefully so those of different bias can hear us more clearly.
