The Siler City Farmers’ Market is planning several specials to help celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend. The market is open 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM every Saturday at 118 West Second Street in downtown Siler City.

Mazie Summers soaps will have gift packages of homemade soaps and other bath products. Poverty Hollow Farm Kitchen will have the usual line of breads, cookies, jams and pickles, plus some extra cakes. Of course, the big attraction is Gary Thomas Farms fresh strawberries. For those who enjoyed their pickled asparagus at the “Farm to Fork” dinner in March, they have just processed a new batch. Donniesbrook Farm has a limited supply of shitake mushrooms, along with greens, eggs, onions, radishes, etc. Lindley Farms Creamery will be on hand for the first time this year with their homemade mozzarella cheese cakes for that special dessert. There will be several other vendors with plants, more produce and lots of surprises.

The special event this weekend will be local blacksmith Larry Cooper demonstrating his modern version of the old fashioned scythe. we’re not suggesting this as a Mother’s Day gift, although as easy as he makes it look, some mothers could probably use it. Larry promotes this as an eco-friendly, economical, locally made alternative to your gas powered mower. He will also be promoting some of the tools he will be making and repairs he can do when his new shop (right across the railroad tracks from the market lot) is finished.

It sounds like the weather will be nice on Saturday for a change, so come out and support your local farmers (and blacksmiths)
