Subject: Why I’m voting Democratic

I have been a Democrat all my life, even before I could vote.  So I will be voting for the good Democrats on the ballot.  Locally, here’s how I’ll vote for people who will serve our county.  The time has come for all of us to think carefully before we vote, and to vote!  Many people are quite discouraged.  Rumors and lies abound, but think, search out facts, and do vote.  Here are the folks I’m voting for.

Ellie Kinnaird has been a NC Senator for years, and she once represented Chatham.  At a recent candidate forum, she pointed out that the Republican General Assembly gave a huge amount of money to rich people who didn’t need it, money that could have gone to our schools.  She is smart, responsible, and listens to her constituents, all of them.

Deb McManus has worked in and for Chatham on the school board, and we and the schools are better for it.  She is against fracking, which our General Assembly voted to allow in 2014.  I live in Southeast Chatham, and we down here are very upset about the possibility of fracking near the Deep River, which is where the gas deposits are.  I’m not sure what can be done at this point, but I want all the folks who see clearly the dangers to our health, environment, and our homes to be elected, and both Ellie and Deb are very clear about these dangers.

Sally Kost has served one term, and with her knowledge of county budgets (she worked on the budget as a staff person in Orange County, advised Wake County) she helped our present commissioners work with the budget to save money but keep our schools doing as well as possible.  Sally hears us and is concerned for our future, our environment, our schools, job opportunities that pay decently, and generally open, fair government.

Mike Cross is the rep from my district (2), and I’ve worked with him on environmental problems in the Southeast Chatham area for years.  He is so conscientious about serving all of us; he represents Chatham on many regional boards.  He also is strongly opposed to fracking.

David Price will now again represent us in Congress, if we elect him.  We lost him here in southern Chatham for a few years.  David always held town meetings so we could be in the same room with him and ask him hard questions.  He never dodged; he listened.  I used to pester him quite a lot about safe storage at Shearon Harris, and he listened.  He was later responsible for insisting that the Federal Government watchdog Shearon Harris more carefully.  He is a worthy counterplayer, whatever your views.

And the court judges who will judge things for Chatham:  I’ll vote for:

NC Supreme Court, Judge Sam J. Ervin IV (the recent re-districting, or gerrymandering of the General Assembly districts will be challenged in the NC Supreme Court).  We need fair judges.  Judge Sam will do that.

NC Court of Appeals:  Judges Linda McGee, Wanda G. Bryant, Cressie Thigpen (all incumbents)
District Court:  Judges Charles Angerson, Jay Bryan, Lunsford Long, Beverly A. Scarlett (all incumbents)

Board of Education (no opponents to these folks–both good, I understand.  I know David Hamm responded to my concerns when the small rural schools were being changed–and the Board supported many, many folks’ concerns.
David Hamm (Dist 2) and Karen Howard (Dist 1)

Trevia Seagroves, Register of Deeds
J. Lynn Mann, Soil and Water

If you’ve already voted, great.  If not, the early voting is going on, and I’ll be a poll greeter for the Democrats at Three Rivers in Moncure on election day.  Maybe I’ll see some of you there.  Judy Hogan
