Subject: Chatham’s Vote
While as an active citizen, I am thrilled to see the energy generated by the Presidential election, I am dismayed that less than half of Chatham’s registered voters participated in the May Primary held on May 6, 2008.
Some would insist that I am being pessimistic by seeing the glass as half empty rather than half-full. After all, 47% of Chatham’s registered voting population, approximately 18, 616 people participated. According to 2006 statistics, that constitutes approximately10% more voters than the total number of people who usually participate in Primaries.
However, somehow it unnerves me that 53% of Chatham’s 39,471 registered voters, 20,855 people, did not find it necessary, despite the problems we all face as a nation, to put aside something for a minute and vote for either one of the two candidates vying to replace George Bush.
