A recent chatlist post was lamenting “chemical dumping” and “horrendous temperatures” and attributed it to the mysterious “they”.
In fact, as the most recent Chatham County Greenhouse Gas Inventory (see
https://chathamnc.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=9615112&GUID=4BEA1497-0F38-4065-A313-6C50640089A7 ) showed, it’s not “they” but “us”.
The largest emissions sector in Chatham County is Transportation, at 42.7% of CO2 equivalent emissions, followed by Industrial (20.5%) and Residential (19.5%). These emissions have been accumulating in the
atmosphere and have measurable effects on our climate, including more frequent and more severe droughts and heat waves and hurricanes becoming stronger and more intense.
All is not lost, but time is running out for action. YOU can help as an individual! Many of the things you can do not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also save you MONEY. Among them:
– Use greener transportation (bus, bike, walk) when practical
– Drive efficiently; go easy on gas and brakes
– Choose an efficient vehicle – check the MPG ratings
– Buy and use an electric car if you can
– Make fewer trips; combine errands, work remotely if you can
– Seal and insulate your home
– Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED lighting
– Replace old inefficient appliances with Energy Star certified ones
– Install a programmable thermostat
– Turn off lights when not needed
