It will be interesting to see what the removal of mature trees will do for our 13 year cicada emergence that should be happening in 2024. The last one was an amazing act of nature within the city because of old those trees.
One thing for certain is with the loss of trees in PBO, it sure feels hotter in the summer and colder in the winter compared to where big trees still exist. About 10 minutes outside of PBO it is at least 5 degrees cooler than downtown and the surrounding developments devoid of trees. When there’s frost all over, my place is clear of it. Sure, the new homes are cute but being piled together with little to no room for trees will have its disadvantages over time. The developers even wiped out the trees in the area that was turned into a dog park. One tiny shade structure was put in the middle of the park that will be unusable except in the very early morning or late evening hours of the summer.
I think Duke Energy will be very happy with the utility bills from PBO in the coming years.
