Although this information has been reported in newspapers, many of us only get our news on line and on this chat list – thus this post. A well organized groups of criminals are targeting people over 70 with a social security scam. They function internationally and are extremely clever and well organized. If you receive a call telling you your social security number has been suspended, hang up. Then report the call to the sheriff’s office 919-542-2811.
There have been several (many?) incidents perpetrated in Chatham and Orange Counties recently. Apparently and unfortunately , the policy of the sheriff’s office is to not report news like this (criminal activity) on the chat list. And according to the sheriff’s office, everybody’s social security card has been compromised. Please spread the word. Older people who rely on their social security benefits are those most frequently targeted.

Subject: International scam has hit Chatham County
Just to add to the warning, I have gotten many phone calls related to Soc Sec, which
I just hang up on. But I almost got caught on one on the internet. The Scam is to use
a common website like Amazon, and state there is a problem, and give a number to
call to help settle the issue. I also got a similar one about Square. It was a phishing
expedition to acquire my Soc Sec number, and I almost fell for it. Emotions can do
that. So always look at the email address of the sender.
That is my 2 cents.
