Check the amount of insulation in the attic since that is where most energy gain/loss is located and the easiest/cheapest to adjust.

A quick search found this site about insulation recommendations,
http://www.reca-codes.org/codes2012/North%20Carolina.pdf.

Our house in the city was built in the mid 70’s and was more than half the size of our current house in Chatham county but our current power bills are at least half of the old house.  The difference is in the amount of insulation.

The cost of of a Kilowatt in Chatham county is about 12/13 cents, including all taxes and fees.  As far as I know, the cost per KW is the same for all Duke Power customers in our area.

Lowes might have insulation installers.  They do have machines that will blow the insulation into the attic for the DIYers.
