Subject: An Early Fall for me . . .
A fall for folks over forty hurts. A fall for seniors over 60 is dangerous and for those over 80, a fall can be fatal. I fall into the last category. I hadn’t fallen in over a year. I have been doing foot exercises for over a year now and my gait has improved remarkably. Today, it was different.
I was gardening- wearing old clothes, elastic knee supports and cheap foam rubber knee pads. Should have been protection enough. Friends dropped by to look at the gardens- I wanted to show them a project i was working on in the garage. I sprinted forth toward that area, on the old hyway 64 I am always bragging about- Now crumbling asphalt.
Suddenly, before I knew what happened, I was going down, head first. My knee pads are such ninnies- They won’t stay up- keeping sliding down. Down, down- it was so quick my life didn’t have time to review before I hit. First the uncovered knee, then the elbow and then the side of my head- knocking my glasses sideways- i thought I was a broken mess- But all that really hurt was my knee. The pad had slipped down- no protection.
A lay there a few minutes, assuring my guests I was o.k.- That knee really hurt. But in true ‘show-biz’ style I was up and att-um within five minutes. Assuring my friends I wasn’t hurt.
Later, when alone, I realized my left leg was weaken and not feeling so hot. Peeling away the layers of clothing etc.- there was that big bloody kneecap. Later, my gate not so great, I managed to step on my cat’s foot sending him screaming into the great beyond.
I’ll be alright- Just watching my step until I get it all together again-
And y’all watch yours- Fall may come a little early for somebody else.
