Subject: Urgent Need for High Speed Internet
From reading the many complaints here, it would seem apparent that Chatham County has an urgent need for high speed broadband service for internet access. Or perhaps it is apparent to any but our county representatives who do not seem able to approve options to the poor internet service from Centurylink and AT&T. Why is Chatham Country constrained by 1992 internet speeds in a 2019 world? (Paraphrased from a Facebook post on Broadband for Northeast Chatham County, NC.

While a significant portion of the County (Pittsboro, Siler City, some areas near Chapel Hill and those in the western areas serviced by Randolph Communications) get good to decent speeds, most of this rural county suffers with dramatically slow speeds (mine is 2.5Mbps DSL from Centurylink — many have far worse service down to less than 0.5Mbps). Acceptable speeds for today’s world are a minimum of 10Mbps or the typical accepted standard of 25Mbps or above.) Chatham Park will at some point get these higher speeds, but that does nothing for the remainder of us with no current hope for adequate service.
Other rural NC counties are finding ways to create or take advantage of high speed internet services despite NCs archaic, corporation-centric laws. Why are Chatham Country representatives stuck in the same muck as our internet service offerings?
