Subject: Making America Great by Going Back to the Middle Ages
My friend was caught up in the immigration sweep a few weeks ago. Fidel is a good man. He has lived in Chatham County longer than most, is a hard and reliable worker and sole support for his family. In my opinion, tearing a family apart is a horrible way to resolve our immigration issue but I understand that Fidel did not have proper documentation. What I don’t understand how low, vindictive and mean spirited this great country has chosen to treat ‘others’. I learned today that Fidel will be transported back to his birth country in handcuffs. He will begin his new life as a criminal, unless he can pay for his own deportation. If he can come up with the cost of his transportation he can go back and walk off the plane as a free man. In other words, if he can pay his debt for deportation he can travel as a free man. If he cannot pay the debt our government has imposed on him he will be transported in handcuffs. Going to prison for the inability to pay your debts was outlawed by civilized people centuries ago. Isn’t deportation bad enough? What do we show our children and civil societies by our bullying, cruelty and mean spiritedness? Yes, I sincerely hope that beginning in November we can begin to Make America Great Again
