Hi Sherry,
Couple things became apparent when we needed to vacate the 2 tanks for a sunroom going too near these tanks.
1. Have them do a 4 foot soil core sample to determine the clay content type and depth.
2. If clay is found, special backfilling is strongly recommended, ( manufactures do have this in writing ) one foot at a layer, then machine tamped x 7-8 feet the hole is deep. – or- contract for load of crush and run that fills tight on its own.
These steps are needed, or, the surrounding soil will settle 2-3-4 times needing more dirt and tamping. Stops settling if just clay machine shoveled beside the tanks for ONE YEAR.
3. When they start, have contractor shave and save the existing top soil and set well aside for reuse.
4. Also, the majority of the digging for 2 tanks 7’x10′, will leave a huge volume of “extra” clay. So, have him tell you he will take it off site or at an area you specify.
Do not allow contractor to just spread this huge volume of clay out on your yard.
From (poor) experience, we now have a 10 in high 40’x60′ clay dome that: awful when wet, and does not grow grass well at all.
