There is so much stuff going on that I don’t know where to start. The House Bill 2 that was ratified on Friday provides for a separate US House of Representatives (Congressional) Primary Election on June 7th. There will be a new filing period beginning at noon on Wednesday, March 16th and ends at noon on Friday, March 25th. The new maps put Chatham County in Congressional District 6. There will be no Second Primaries this year.
Our election will still go forth on March 15th with early voting starting on March 3rd. We have 4 sites open in Chatham County. The North Chatham site is at the old Cole Park Plaza (North Chatham Village Shopping Center), Pittsboro site is here at the Board of Elections office, Siler City at the Earl B. Fitts Community Center and in Goldston at the Town Hall. All sites are open from 7 am until 7 pm on weekdays and the first Saturday is 8 am to 6 pm and the last Saturday is from 8 am until 1 pm. The voter registration deadline was Friday, February 19th, but In person registration is still available at early voting. The deadline to change your party affiliation was Friday, February 19th. Any registered voter in Chatham County can vote at any of the early voting sites.
The sink hole on Lystra Road may cause some issues with voters at early voting and on Election Day at the North Williams/Carolina Meadows polling place. Please encourage people to use Old Lystra Road or some other detour.
We have changed the voter entrance at Perry Harrison school for Election Day. Voters will enter at the far right side of the gym. Handicapped voters can still enter in the old entrance on the other side of the gym. We would also like to make voters aware that school will be in session, so you may want to go at a time other than the start or the ending of the school day.. We will have lots of signs and voter parking will be marked in the parking lot.
We have a new polling place for Oakland precinct. The new polling place is the new Fire Station on Walter Bright road.
Any votes cast for the Congressional races under the old districts will not be certified and any votes cast will not be a public record. We are encouraging voters to vote the whole ballot so that there will be no confusion among voters about which race will not be counted.
Photo ID is still a requirement for this election, but there are exceptions and we are encouraging everyone to vote, even if you do not have a photo ID.
We have already sent out approximately 425 absentee ballots so far here in Chatham County.
