Chatham Animal Rescue & Education (CARE) launched itsPet Responsibility and Education Program (PREP) with Chatham Charter 4thgraders January 14th. PREP’s mission is to provide and drive solutions tothe pet overpopulation crisis in Chatham County, with the goal of reducing the intake of adoptable animals at the county shelter and thereby reducing the euthanasia rates.. The program is modeled after Moore County’s Pet Responsibility Committee (www.mcprc.org) which launched in 2008 and reaches over 1,000 fourth grade students annually.

PREP targets Chatham County fourth graders using a six-week curriculum focusing on weekly “I Can†statements. It integrates with North Carolina Public School’s Character EducationProgram and is linked to the N.C. Standard Course of Study. Character education traits stressed in the program include courage, good judgment, integrity,kindness, perseverance, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness,caring, good citizenship and self-discipline.

Lillie’s Fund is a targete dspay/neuter program managed by CARE, subsidizing sterilization surgeries for pets of families in Chatham County. CARE is a volunteer-based, nonprofit animal welfare organization that has served the community for 40 years.
