Chatham Correcting Some Tax Bills with Late Listing Penalty

PITTSBORO- Some Chatham County taxpayers who returned their property tax listing forms on time earlier this year have received an inaccurate tax bill that includes a late listing fee when it should not have had the late fee. The Tax Office is aware of the problem and will be sending corrected tax bills that remove the late listing fee.

“It appears that the company that receives the tax listing forms from Chatham taxpayers had a glitch in their system, so that three days of returned listing forms did not get forwarded to our Tax Office,” said Chatham Tax Administrator Frances Wilson. “This triggered the addition of the last listing penalty for some tax bills, when it should not have been added.”

Wilson said that the Tax Office knows which taxpayers were affected and will be sending them revised tax bills by Sept. 30, 2014. “However, if you sent back your listing form after the deadline, you will still have to pay the late lsting fee and will not get a corrected bill.”

Residential and most business taxpayers had until Jan. 31, 2014 to return their listing forms, while some businesses received an extension until March 15, 2014. Any forms received after the appropriate date requires the county to charge the late listing fee.

Wilson advises residents to contact the Tax Office if you should receive a corrected tax bill without the late listing fee on it, but do not receive one by Sept. 30. Contact the Tax Collections Office at 919-542-8260.
