Twenty-Five Year Old Novel Wins $10,000
Can you write a novel, put it away for twenty five years, enter a contest and win $10,000?
That’s what Ruth Moose of Fearrington Village in Pittsboro did with her first novel,
Doing it at the Dixie Dew.
In 1987, Moose lived in the Uwharrie Mountains near Charlotte, NC where she worked nine months a year as Reference Librarian atPfeiffer University. For 3 months each summer, she wrote. The first draft of this novel was written on a Kaypro, an early word processor. Moose wrote it along with short stories and poems. The stories published in Redbook, Ladies’ Home Journal, Good Housekeeping as well as literary magazines. Her short stories were taught in the curriculum at the University of Denmark. She published three collections of short stories, six collections of poetry, moved twice, began a teaching career on the creative writing faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill where she received high honors for her work..
The novel, originally called Murder on Main Street, languished, was uploaded to another electronic system, Dell. Then a few years later, to an Apple. With each conversion, Moose revised. When she entered and won the $10,000 Malice Domestic competition, still more revision. Her title changed, as did the name of the town and some character’s names.
Doing it at the Dixie Dew, a murder mystery, is a “cozy†featuring the other side of a crime. Not the police procedural, but an ordinary person in their daily life who gets involved in a murder. And has to solve it. Beth McKenzie Henry’s only inheritance is a dilapidated old Southern mansion. She has to turn it into a bed and breakfast. to try to make a living. Her first guest is found dead in bed. Murdered. There is an attempt on Beth’s life and lots of suspects in, out, around and about. Some Southern crazy, some weird, some just plain evil.
Moose has written for newspapers, conducted workshops, been a visiting poet in numerous schools, chaired conferences on women’s rights, served on boards of writers organizations, demonstrated microwave ovens, tested recipes for Betty Crocker Kitchens, raised two sons and now writes full time. Her current work is a sequel, Doing it AGAIN, at the Dixie Dew.
