Hello All and Happy Independence Day Week!
Did you know the original drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper? Today British farmers are growing hemp for food, fiber, animal bedding, construction products and more, yet American farmers are still barred from growing hemp as a crop despite hemp’s important role in America’s history through World War II. Frequently confused with its plant cousin marijuana, industrial hemp is actually a non-psychoactive plant, grown in 31 other countries, but just now being allowed to grow for research in some states. Legalization advocates say it could help American farmers, create jobs and replace thousands of harmful petro-chemical and synthetic products. But why can’t we grow it legally here?
The Chatham County Democratic Party is hosting a FREE screening of the award-winning documentary film BRINGING IT HOME at the Pittsboro Roadhouse on Tuesday, July 8th
Post-screening Q&A with local Director Linda Booker.
BRINGING IT HOME was inspired by a father’s search for non-toxic, sustainable construction products that led to hempcrete — a carbon negative, mold resistant and energy efficient material that has to be imported from overseas. In addition to hemp building, the film explores hemp’s past, present and future with animation, archival footage and interviews with business owners using it for textiles, nutrition, body products and bio-plastics in the U.S.A and abroad.
