I have searched high and low and the closest i’ve found is Splat space in Durham, went on a tour and the location/projects and hardware were impressive but the distance has prevented me from becoming a member or paying dues.

I would absolutely love to have our own local Hackerspace and I have already looked into building one myself along with some other interested Chathamites in the Maker communities and North Carolina2600 groups who have expressed interest in helping set one up

The two biggest issues imho are finding a good location, people willing to put some physical labor into it alongside me instead of just talking about building one and it would need to be in a location that will be able to get the appropriate bandwidth as with our ISP choices in Chatham this has been difficult even for those of us considered “business class” customers.

If any others on the list are interested in throwing a plan together and bringing it to life please let me know. I have many contacts in the security community who would be glad to help in any way they can as well as many friends who run HackerSpace’s across the country who could provide advice/assistance and insight into some of the issues they faced when building their spaces.

We honestly just need a medium sized group of hackers/hobbyists types together who are all willing and able to sit down, get a 501.3c in place, find a mutually agreeable and hopefully cheap location and who can also help with the building/setting up of the space and the associated legwork. If there is enough interest out there I would be more than happy to devote the majority of my free time to it.

I have presented at HackerSpaces and Security B-sides events and helped found a hackerspace called NESIT up north in my old home state of Connecticut which has since flourished. In a hackerspace environment, I specialize and tend to focus on information security related issues, locksport and training people on how to pick locks as I am a long standing member of FALE, www.lockfale.com, 3d printing, design and fabrication and have taught numerous classes in the past with students of all ages on how to build projects based on raspberry pi and beaglebone boards which brings with it soldering, breadboards and general circuit design.

Anyway before I turn this into a rant about my dreams for the future, if any other chathamites or people who do not feel like having to drive a significant distance to participate, interact with other like-minded individuals and learn at a hackerspace similar to Splat Space, email me as I’d love to organize a group to possibly get together and lay the ground work for such a project. If this sounds like something up your alley shoot e an email with Chatham HackSpace or something similar in the subject so I can get an idea of how many people would be interested and then we can perhaps throw a mailing list together or plan a meetup to discuss planning.

Anyway, time for me to get back to work and thank you to Jody for bringing up one of the things I am most passionate about up on the Chatlist as I previously thought i was the only one feeling that way. Apologies for the grammatical mess of this email as I am typing on a phone and have rather large thumbs.

Also, on a somewhat separate note. If any local businesses are interested in learning about Bitcoin and how to accept it as a payment option please contact me as well as this is also something I am also very passionate about and willing to do for free. A major bonus to accepting Bitcoin aside from the fundamental ideals behind it is that when word gets out about a business that has started accepting Bitcoin, people will actively seek out that business, sometimes driving all the way from other states just to make an in person Bitcoin transaction to support a business who accepts and elieves in Bitcoin.

I figured adding that last portion would save me from walking from door to door handing out Bitcoin explanation flyers as I have been planning on doing for some time. So if your interest is a hacker/maker space coming to your local area or you would like to leanr more about Bitcoin/Crypto Currency and utilizing it for your business or just personally shoot me an email.

Much Love
Evan Keiser

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good hackerspaces that exist near Chatham County. (If there aren’t any, there should be!)

Anyone?
