*Chatham Literacy Seeks Tutors for Adult Learners*
The Chatham County Literacy Council (Chatham Literacy), a Pittsboro-based non-profit, is seeking volunteer tutors for its adult literacy programs, which help adults improve their reading, writing, math or English-language skills through one-on-one and small-group instruction.
According to the Census Bureau’s most recent American Community Survey, 6.4% of Chatham County adults speak English less than “very well,†greater than the state’s 4.9%. In the Siler City area, the figure is more than 30%.
In the past six years, Chatham Literacy has helped more than 400 adults in Chatham County improve their language skills. However, Chatham Literacy’s demand for tutors exceeds its supply. More than two dozen adults are waiting for an available tutor.
The process for becoming a tutor involves 10 hours of free training over two days. While training is typically offered in the spring and fall, Chatham Literacy may offer small-group training on an as-needed basis to prepare tutors as quickly as possible.
Chatham Literacy offers instruction in reading, writing, basic math, English as a Second Language learning, GED preparation, citizenship preparation and computer literacy. Volunteers can choose the subject they are most comfortable teaching.
The tutoring commitment is as least six months, with tutors meeting an adult learner once or twice a week for an hour-long session. The services are offered at convenient locations throughout Chatham County, including Central Carolina Community College’s Pittsboro and Siler City campuses, Chatham Community Library, Wren Memorial Library, First United Methodist Church in Siler City, The Armory, Jordan-Matthews High School, Carolina Meadows and Galloway Ridge.
To help an adult achieve his/her goal of stronger literacy skills, visit www.chathamliteracy.org and complete a tutor application form. For questions, contact or 919-742-0578.
