Chatham Fire Districts’ Proposed Budgets Now Available Online
PITTSBORO— The Chatham County Manager’s Office has completed its review of budget requests from the 12 county fire districts and has posted this final component of the proposed FY 2014-15 budget online. As part of the budget process, the Board of Commissioners will approve tax rates for the fire districts.
The fire districts’ proposed budgets were delayed this year due to a major statewide change beginning in September 2013 that shifted the collection of county motor vehicle taxes to the NC Division of Motor Vehicles. This change meant that revenue information needed to develop fire district budgets was not available until mid-March.
“County staff has now had the time to fully review the fire districts’ proposed budgets and make recommendations,” said Assistant County Manager Renee Paschal. The complete budget is now available online for review by the public at http://www.chathamnc.org/
Paschal said that the County Manager’s Office has recommended all fire districts’ budgets as requested with one exception.
“Siler City Fire Department had requested a two-cent increase to fund a full-time paid fire chief as well as funds set aside to replace equipment and make capital improvements. Staff review and subsequent discussions with the town led to the one-cent recommendation that will ensure the department has the resources to hire a full-time paid fire chief,” Paschal said.
Public hearings on the budget are slated for May 19 at 6 pm in Pittsboro at the Historic Courthouse and May 20 at 6 pm in the Siler City Courtroom in Town Hall.
