Subject: Civil War program this Sunday

The Chatham County Historical Association invites you to a special presentation of Civil War in the North Carolina Quaker Belt: The Confederate Campaign against Peace Agitators, Deserters, and Draft Dodgers.   The program will follow a very brief business meeting of the association to begin at 2 PM in the historic Chatham County Courthouse in Pittsboro on Sunday, February 23.

The program for this meeting will consist of a video interview with the late William T. Auman, whose book is an account of military operations conducted by the Confederacy against deserters and disloyalists and how these “outliers” managed to elude capture and survive.   The skirmishes between the factions and brutal acts on both sides of this conflict will be described. Mr. Auman argues that the Tar Heel wartime “peace movement” was, in fact, an insurgency that strove to return North Carolina and the south to the Union–with the institution of slavery protected by the Constitution in the returning states.  Mr. Auman’s sister, Ann Brown, of Pittsboro will be a special guest at the program.

The program is free and the public is warmly invited.  The Chatham Historical Museum, located in the courthouse, will be open following the program.
