Dear Debbie, If you are healthy and so inclined, all you need is a hammer and a “fence tool” and patience.

In case you don’t know, a “fence tool”(any farm supply or hardware store, maybe $15-20 nowadays)(must be one in my tool shed you may borrow) is built like a large pair of pliers, but the business end has a pointed tapered probe on one side and a flat surface on the other. Poke the point under the staple and strike the flat with the hammer forcing the tapered probe between the staple and the post and forcing the staple out of the post.  The “fence tool” also has a grasp for pulling staples and a very powerful wire cutter.

Wear your gloves and enjoy every staple popping out! Be careful rolling up the wire so you don’t catch a barb!

either use the posts for your new fence, pull them out, or saw them off if wood. We also stopped putting up barbed wire on inside fences years ago, but still have some on border fences that has stayed tight and very functional for cattle for 30-40 years.
