Subject: Swimming with Mabel
Eighteen years ago, when my son and his friend Danny were in prek together at North Chatham, the teachers used a whale name Mabel to track the kids behavior. Â If you were good….meaning you followed the rules….you got to swim with Mable. Â I can count on one hand the times my kid did that and Danny was right there with him. Â Got so discouraging for both of us, I just stopped asking “Did you swim with Mabel today?”
All these years later, they are still buds, have graduated from college and are doing amazing things. Â My son is in Alaska and Danny is flying out to meet him and they will hike and camp through Washington state and Montana.Â
So Ms. Hamm and Ms. Baulknight, it you’re still out there,  just wanted to let you know that  I feel like the boys are swimming with Mabel, even if it’s in a ocean of their own making.  So if you have a kid that doesn’t swim well with the others, don’t worry…..they will be fine with your love and guidance.
Thanks to the Chatham teachers who inspire, especially those who understand kids are not fish.
