Subject: more thoughts on chain saw chain care…who knew?
the reason there are so many places to take your chain around here is that the chain usually has to be re-ground.
sharpening a chain properly takes skill learned only through lots of practice (in my opinion). the typical non-professional cuts a lot of stuff other than wood and the chain just cannot be properly sharpened with hand files, power drills and the like.
compared to a new chain cost, the 4-8 dollars (typical) you spend to have your chain re-ground is cheap because you can have this done multiple times. use the files and such for “touch-up” when your chain comes in contact with the ground, rocks, sand/dirt encrusted logs, wire, nails, etc.
