Options Available to Help Chatham Seniors Deal with Summer Heat

fancionPITTSBORO–The Chatham County Council on Aging offers several programs and suggestions to help local senior citizens cope with the heat this summer.  “We know that extreme temperatures can be a serious health threat to all of our residents, but seniors must be especially careful,” says Angel Dennison, director of the Council on Aging.

For those without air conditioning, the Council participates in a fan donation program funded through a statewide program sponsored by utility companies.

“Residents who are at least 61 years can receive an electric box-style fan at no charge. If you are aware of a senior citizen in need of a fan, please contact Brett Moraes at 919-542-4512. Also, due to having a limited supply of fans, we would be grateful for donations of fans or contributions to buy fans,” Dennison said.

The Council on Aging invites seniors to enjoy the air conditioning at both the Pittsboro and Siler City Senior Centers, which are open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

“Generally, group activities and wellness programs are offered in the mornings, while art programs, line dancing, quilting groups, etc are offered in the afternoons,” Dennison said, “but activity schedules vary for each center.”

Dennison said that lunch is served at 11:45 am, but registration is required. “The exercise room stays open until 5 pm. However, it is important to note that even when no activities are planned, seniors are welcome to stay here in the cool air to read, watch TV, socialize or play board games and card games with others.”

To find out more about scheduled activities, call 919-542-4512 for Pittsboro activities and 919-742-3975 for Siler City activities.
