Zero tolerance is not a human goal

Mr. Wally, post 4608,

Yes, this reply is old, but I want to take the time to respond properly, rather than flippantly and without respect.

Per the post on my gas drilling comment, I do believe that a good contractor will do a good job.  I have worked for good ones and bad ones as a contractor of forty years.  If the specifications and rules are made with environmental safety and the welfare of the citizens in mind, the process will be executed well.

The present design for gas wells includes a cement full casing all the way to drill depth.  That seems to be adequate for any contamination of surface waters and water wells thousands of feet above the deposit.  The commission on mining and oil will produce the standards.  They may not be what some environmentalists want, but they will be made with everyone’s goals considered.

Some radicals want no pollutants at all, though they are in such quantities that they are safe for drinking water per the EPA and CDC.  Some want to base their arguments on anecdotal stories and empirical evidence without scientifically conducted studies to verify the assumption.  So based on faulty assumptions and narrow minds, the zero tolerance standard is commonplace now among these people.

Zero tolerance is not a human goal.  If it were, all violators would be put to death and we would have no humans.  If you have ever run a red light, said something you regret, or inadvertantly shortchanged someone, you will be put to death.  That way, the human race will become perfect.   Remind you of someone, maybe Stalin, Mao or Hitler?

Some will agree with that, but most humans realize that mistakes are part of human makeup and tolerance is necessary for the survival of our society.  I.e., nothing is perfect and gas drilling will, most likely, produce some pollution.  Note the space program as an example.  So far, among the tens of thousands of wells drilled using the hydraulic fracturing method, few accidents have occured in states allowing it.

As to the “magic verbal comments,”  Actually, most of mine are written.  I study the issues in depth.  My comments are carefully considered and require a good deal of my time to research.  Articles in the Chatham Journal require a day to compose, unless detailed research is needed.  And, yes, my views do not represent any party other than my own unaffiliated/independent opinions, which are conservative.  So, the only party I represent is the Independent Party, not yet approved by congress.

Your comments reflect a desperation of a party which is failing in registration and its liberal views.  Once representing 70% of voters in Chatham, it has fallen to 44%.  The independents are now 29%, while republicans have grown to 26%.  Ever wonder why this change has occured?  It is a response to unconstitutional actions, hyper-restrictive rules and regulations, dispassionate laws hurting our neighbors and friends, and too much government.  This response has nothing to do with racism.

Slights on me or my views are desparate attempts to avoid the inevitable change.  We are back to the task of educating the 100th monkey.
