June 17-23, 2013 is the 7th Annual National Pollinator Week as designated by the U.S. Senate and proclaimed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

It’s exciting to see how nationwide the public interest and awareness in pollinators has grown significantly over the past few years. I feel like here in Chatham County, every week is Pollinator Week because it has been a big passion of mine for years and I do alot of educational programming around this topic. We also have a very active Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association (CCBA)<http://chathambeekeepers.wordpress.com/> that does educational programs both on their own and in partnership with Cooperative Extension. Extension and the CCBA partner to conduct a very popular 8-week Beekeeping School and to celebrate Pollinator Day.

My best tool is Chatham County Cooperative Extension’s Pollinator Paradise Garden <http://growingsmallfarms.ces.ncsu.edu/growingsmallfarms-pollinatorgarden/> at Chatham Mills in Pittsboro, an educational demonstration garden I created back in 2008 to highlight the importance of providing foraging habitat for our pollinators. Over 140 different plants, 85% of them native to the piedmont of North Carolina, attract dozens of species of pollinators as well as visitors from across the state. I conduct monthly garden tours and regular workshops in the garden.
