2012 Exploring Nature in Chatham Series

Saturday, November 3rd from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon:  Rocky River Walking Tour

Join the Siler City NC STEP’s leadership team in a guided walking tour of a proposed Rocky River Nature Trail in the Central Carolina Business Park. Our guide will be Donna Sivulka with the committee working on a Concept Plan for the proposed greenway trail.  Funding for the Concept Plan is part of the NC Small Towns Economic Prosperity (NC STEP) revitalization program underway in Siler City.  The Siler City and County Board of Commissioners will need to approve the Concept Plan in order for the proposed greenway trail to be developed.  The Rocky River is located almost entirely within Chatham County and currently has limited public access points.  Almost its entire length across the county is ranked highly as a Nationally Significant Natural Heritage Area because the river is home to several rare and endangered species.  This walking tour is a special opportunity to learn more about the proposed trail and see parts of the river that are not usually visible to the general public.

Participants should wear long pants, light colored short or long sleeve shirt, and sturdy shoes for walking on uneven terrain.  A temporary trail that is reasonably passable has been created along the river and across several ridges to facilitate a tour of the property.
