Banned Books Week at Chatham Community Library

This week Chatham Community Library celebrates the importance of first amendment rights and celebrates our right to read what we want. Come see the banned book room and see books that have been challenged or
banned in countries around the world, including the U.S. Some of the titles might surprise you; for example a book for kindergarten-aged children called “A Visit to Cuba†was removed from school library shelves in Miami, Florida after parents complained that it did not accurately portray the horrors of communism. Other books have been challenged or banned for reasons ranging from profanity
to depictions of violence to unflattering portrayals of capitalism. Examples of books that were challenged or banned in 2010-2011 include Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Snow Falling on Cedars, Water for Elephants, and The Koran. The banned book room is open during normal library hours: M, W, & F 9 a.m. to 6 p.m..; T & Th 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fri 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sat 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
