Brother Towns/Pueblos Hermanos by Dr. Charles D. Thompson Jr. and Michael Davey
Post Screening Discussion with Director Charlie Thompson, Pastor Daniel Pantoja and the Hispanic Liaison of Chatham County.
Shown with Jocelin Teutle’s “Just As I Believe”- A short film produced in ChathamArts’ “Shooting4Change” youth documentary filmmaking program last year.
Brother Towns/Pueblos Hermanos (1 hour documentary) is a story about
two communities in two different nations and how they intertwine.
Ultimately, it is about how we define ourselves as nations and
neighbors, our vision of community, and our efforts to connect to one
another. News stories about immigrants in the United States appear on
TV and in the papers daily. But we don’t have to listen to the news
to know that undocumented immigrants live in nearly every community
across the U.S. Thus Brother Towns is a story that also affects
nearly every city and town in Mexico and Central America, and one
that helps us think about not only citizenship, but what it means to
be human.
The first indigenous Maya person Charlie Thompson ever met was
working on a farm in Pittsboro. “Victor” fled Guatemala as a refugee
following the brutal death of his brother, and he ended up in North
Carolina for a year before seeking asylum in Canada. This meeting
inspired Thompson to do anthropological field work in Victor’s
hometown, Jacaltenango. He recalls, “I saw children all over town
wearing t-shirts and caps emblazoned with the word, ‘Jupiter;” only
after stopping to ask did I realize Jupiter is a town in Florida, the
destination of thousands of men and women from Jacaltenango who have
gone there as refugees of violence and economics.”
The film that evolved is a story of family, violence in Guatemala, and of cultural beauty. It is also a story of diversity and of the depth of immigrant experiences represented by people in the U.S.

All The Real Girls Directed by David Gordon Green. Featuring Danny
McBride, Zooey Deschanel, Paul Schneider, Patricia Clarkson, Shea
Whigham.
Rated R (for language and some sexualty)
Womanizer Paul (Paul Schneider) is a guy in his mid-’20s who lives in a small North Carolina town, where he earn a living fixing cars for his uncle. Deep down inside, Paul senses that he would like to lead a different life, and that feeling becomes all the more clear when he meets Noel (Zooey Deschanel), his friend’s teenage sister who has come back home after attending a boarding school. Paul and Noel soon fall in love, entering into a mature romantic relationship — the sort that neither has been accustomed to. Abundant TARHEEL connections and present day huge stars are in Green’s 2003 small town love story that was awarded a Special Jury Prize at SUNDANCE 2003. Green attended North Carolina School of the Arts along with Danny McBride (you’ve been in a comedy-free cave if you don’t know this star of TROPIC THUNDER, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS and HBO’s EASTBOUND & DOWN), Zooey Deschanel (now starring on TV’s NEW GIRL was awarded Best Actress at the Mar Del Plata Film Festival for her role), Paul Schneider (born in Asheville – you may have seen him recently in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS) and perennial indy film favorite actress Patricia Clarkson. Filmed in Asheville and Marshall North Carolina.
“remarkable for its genuine, unpretentious lyricism” – A. O. Scott, The New York Times • Grade A: “All the Real Girls is a revelation in its ability to capture how love really feels” – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
