Subject: background checks for volunteers in school system

Having worked in a daycare center, I was required to go to the Clerk of Court’s office and get my own background check for a minimal cost.  I sent Mr. Logan the following email and I am posting his response.

Dear Mr. Logan and BOE members,

After reading a concern from a citizen regarding background checks, I too would be concerned about applying for a volunteer position with critical personal information being handled in such a manner.

When working in a daycare center in Pittsboro, I was required to go to the Clerk of Court and pay for a background check.  The charge was minimal.  This would alleviate your liability should someone’s personal information fall into the wrong hands.

Just a thought.

HIS RESPONSE:
Thank you for your feedback.  We have been conducting these criminal background checks for many years now.  We have not had a problem with confidentiality of records.  Our Human Resource department is fully aware of all legal responsibilities regarding this matter.  Our present process is working very well and it is in the best interest of the students for us to continue the process.  Your suggestion is appreciated.

Thank you
Robert

My next question would be is what is the cost to the school system for background checks?
