Subject: school board presentation to the county commissioners on the budget
At the July 18 commissioners work session, the commissioners turned down the board’s request for $706K to make up for the extra state discretionary cuts. In May, when the board asked the commissioners for additional funds, they provided 9 line items with the budget needed for each.
At that time the commissioners gave the district $110K extra for the line item directly related to the classroom. This time, the board did not give any detail, just that they had a shortfall of $706K. The board voted 2-3 against a blanket increase, but said they would consider specific requests.
As part of Mr. Logan’s presentation to the board, he mentioned that the district already expects a $3M shortfall for 2012-13, since the district does not have fund balance that can be used (as was done for 2011-12).
The board had already scheduled a special meeting July 19 at noon, which includes a discussion on the budget. (I’m not sure why this meeting couldn’t have been held last week, so the presentation to the commissioners could have included specifics.)
