Subject: Register now for Sustainable Design Case Studies at CCCC

Central Carolina Community College – Pittsboro campus
Course Name: Sustainable Design Case Studies
Start/End Date: 03/8/2011 to 05/10/2011
Day: Tuesday Time: 6:00P – 9:00P  (one class meeting or field trip per week)
Cost: $121.25

This course is a sustainable practices continuing education progression from “Introduction to Sustainable Building Design” . It will meet ten (10) times later in the semester to take advantage of maximum daylight conditions for field tours. If you’ve been curious to see new environmentally impactful ideas that are under construction or recently completed sustainable projects, take this course!

Students will gain “inside†knowledge about current sustainable design
principles and emerging design models including “Living Systems Designâ€
and “Eco-restorative Design†.  Students will visit and review three
studio design case studies with tours originating from campus and one
off-campus site visit tour (see 4 below) centered around and in the
Hillsborough (Orange County) area on a weekend.

Students will have rare opportunities to see these first hand examples
of green building and Living Systems design which are not generally
available to the public:
1) Integrated Water Strategies near Apex NC (demonstrating grey water
flows)
2) the new LEED certified Siler City campus building east of Siler City
off Rt. 64
3) the Energy Star rated George and Susan Lankford residence west of
Pittsboro
4) a trio of “green†projects designed by Tim Watson in the
Hillsborough NC area: Energy Star compliant Dyer residence addition
(under construction!); Pleasant Green Farms “off grid†100% P/V
powered entryway complex; Baldwin Farm Resource Center demonstrating
active solar greenhouse + more. This field trip will be conducted
outside of regular class hours on a selected Saturday to be determined
by class participants. All case study field trips will take maximum
advantage of shared ride arrangements.

Sustainable Design Rating Systems Overview
Each field trip will be reviewed per one or more of these applicable
rating systems: Energy Star, Healthy Built Homes, LEED, and the 2009
Sustainable Sites Initiative (being developed by the American Society of
Landscape Architects).
In order to further student learning opportunities student sustainable
design oriented rating system submittals will be encouraged and reviewed
on an individual basis in context with this classes’ case study topics.
