Subject: The Fearrington Folk Art Show is This Weekend!
Come on out to Fearrington for a weekend filled with fun folk art!
Experience a rare opportunity to purchase art directly from over 35 of the Southeast’s finest Folk Artists at the Fearrington Folk Art Show! The 9th Annual Fearrington Folk Art Show will be held in the Barn at Fearrington on Saturday and Sunday, February 19th and 20th from 10am to 5pm with a ticketed private Collector’s Preview event from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, February 18th. Admission to the show is $5. Tickets to the Collectors’ Preview are $25, include wine and hors d’oeurves, and are available online at http://fearringtonfolkartpreview.eventbrite.com/, or in person at McIntyre’s Books in Fearrington Village.
This show is a comprehensive exhibition and sale of widely diverse artwork from Southern American artists who are deeply influenced by the spirit of what folk art, naïve art, primitivism and outsider art represent. The 2011 line-up includes artists Butch Anthony, Sarah Rakes,Trés Taylor, Chris Beck, and Gabriel Shaffer and newcomers Stephanie Astalos-Jones, Chris Beck, and Peter Geiger among others. Featured artwork will include whimsical paintings, fantastical robots, sculptures, pottery and more. All proceeds benefit the artists directly. Admission to the show is $5. Collector’s Preview Tickets are $25 and include readmission to the show throughout the weekend.
Fearrington has garnered a reputation for bringing together a diverse group of artists that represent some of the best, most unique work to be found in the outsider art world. This year the show will once again include the Collectors’ Preview Event beginning with a 6pm panel discussion on the Garden Terrace titled Every Picture (or Pot!) Tells a Story and followed by the Preview in the Barn from 7-9pm. For the serious collector, this is a great opportunity to learn more about this sometimes quirky but always fascinating world, and also to speak directly with the artists. 2011 Panel Discussion:
Every Picture (or Pot!) Tells a Story
A Discussion with Artists and Scholars
We will kick off the Fearrington Folk Art Show Collector’s Preview Event Friday evening with a lively preview panel at 6pm on the Garden Terrace. Please join us as we explore, from four diverse perspectives, the ways in which art tells stories. Art is more than just a way to decorate our living spaces; it has historically been used to chronicle significant experiences and to create a powerful visual record of self, family, community, cultures, and societies.
In this session, the four panelists will explore the storytelling power of art. They are:
* Tim Flinn, a Georgia folk potter who holds an MA in Folk Art and Visual Studies from New York University and the American Folk Art Museum.
* Theresa Gloster, an African-American memory painter from the North Carolina mountains.
* Bernie Herman, Professor of American Studies, Folklore, and Art at UNC-Chapel Hill.
* Lisa Howorth, an art historian and bookstore owner in Oxford, Mississippi.
Chapel Hill gallery owner Ginger Young will moderate, and there will be opportunities for audience members to view examples, to ask questions, and to discuss art as visual narrative with the panelists.
Both Flinn and Gloster will be exhibiting at the Fearrington Folk Art Show.
