In conjunction with Chatham County Parks and Recreation, Young Champions of America offers weekly self defense classes at Camp Royall in Moncure. The spring session began last night.

Strangely, only four children signed up for the beginners class. As it turns out, the Parks and Rec flyers that are typically distributed by Chatham County Schools will not be handed out until later this month. Since the primary means of publicizing the program won’t come through for a little while, I wanted to share a bit about it. Perhaps a child in your family may be interested in participating.

Mr. Chuck, the Young Champions instructor, teaches a house style that blends traditional karate with techniques from tai chi and other martial arts traditions. Children have much to gain by learning karate. The techniques they learn will help build strength, focus, respect, discipline, confidence and self esteem. A minimal investment is needed to get started, just a $8 registration fee and $7 per class. A uniform is not required for beginners.

You may pay per class, which is very helpful if you want to “sample” a couple of classes and see if the program is right for your child. Parent volunteers are also welcome, if you have an interest in self defense or the martial arts. Classes are Tuesday night, with beginners at 6pm, returning students at 6:45pm and advanced class at 7:30pm.

Visit Young Champions of America NC online at www.ycoanc.com/karatehome.html for more information. Email me if you have any questions, or if you would like me to put you in touch with the instructor. Please cross-post this to any other neighborhood lists or forums where there may be interest. Thanks!
