Landfill trash disposal SHOULD be by now as obsolete as hog lagoons. The technology may not be fully developed on a large enough scale yet, but much has been done, and surely will be economically more feasible and ecologically more sound by the time an old fashioned land fill can be sited and built. Landfill money will likely be wasted money poured into an obsolete system.

European egg producers soon learned they could make more money off processing the droppings from their layers than they made from the eggs! Pork producers are learning the same about the enormous value of hog waste.

The methane that just leaks out of the landfill in Guilford County is captured and runs a textile mill and is now a source of contention as a potential source of county revenue.

We should surely be planning for some form of controlled composting and methane production for at least part of our waste.

Surely some of you, in or out of county government, has more detailed knowledge of Guilford’s experience and current technology development. George Lucier was not reelected, but has a chemistry background and is still a valuable citizen resource.
