Subject: Film on Chatham Landfill
I am new to the Chatham Chatlist and would like to introduce myself. My name is Rachel Hazlett, I am an independent journalist/filmmaker.
I direct InformedEmpowered/IE films. Our goal is to tell people’s stories in a captivating way. I aim to choose an issue and evaluate all aspects of it. I understand that people’s values vary, but we share the ability to hear each other’s stories and struggles.
Often times issues are skimmed over by the media, highlighting too few areas and perspectives. Usually the real story lies a few layers deeper. It exists in the history, in the motives. One has to take in many aspects to truly understand an issue: economic, historic, cultural, environmental, governmental, political, and how it all plays out to affect the average Joe.
We are currently covering the Chatham Landfill issue. We want to learn the thorough history of the issue. Who has been affected thus far. How it has politically played out. How and why it is being supported. How and why it is being opposed. What citizens see as the best solution to handling the county’s waste and what the Solid Waste Management Department sees as the best solution to handling the county’s waste. Alternatives to building a regional landfill in Chatham and the viability of those alternatives.
The issue of what to do with our trash is pertinent and interesting. Other counties in and around North Carolina can benefit from witnessing Chatham County deal with what many others will be facing in the near future. If you have a perspective that you would like to share, we would like to hear from you.
