Subject: Credit/Debit Card Theft in Chatham County
Sunday, to my shock, I looked at my bank account online and discovered there were at least five hundred dollars worth of goods charged to my debit card that I had not bought nor authorised. Most of the buying was done in England as far as I could tell. I have been able to trace one $280.00 purchace to a London Store. Other purchaces were made for golf clubs, itunes and pron internet sites.
The thing is, I never use the debit card to buy on line. I never use it for gas. Never have used it at an ATM. Only use in Pittsboro and Siler City for small purchaces. Never put more than fifteen dollars on it. It has never left my hands. No one has come close enough to me to “capture” info with that new handheld scanning device.
Here is where I used the card: In Pittsboro: Foodlion, Family Dollar, Dollar General, PTA Thrift Shop, Farm Store, Chatham Marketplace, Lowes home Improvement. In Siler City only at The Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Walmart.
Anyone else had a similar thing happen here in Chatham? With same stores involved, with a debit card?
I really suspect it is something new, devised in cyber space. Someone somehow is able to tap or hack files at random?
Seems this type of thing is quite common- I have talked to at least 3 people out of 4 who have had similar credit crimes happen to them. I know I will now change my debit card habits or get rid of it altogether.
