The following is a letter from Habitat’s Suzanne Stevens “explaining” why some employees seem to have disappeared from their former positions.  Employees that customers looked forward to seeing, chatting with and appreciating their assistance. Why build up such customer appreciation and then dump the employee, creating  a void that leaves the customer wondering, disappointed and puzzled? Here is the answer we have all been waiting for- long winded to be sure, idealizing the facts and coloring the issues.

Dear Loyal Volunteers,

The next time you visit the Home Stores, you will probably notice some staffing changes.

In an effort to maximize the potential of each store to generate funding to support the Chatham Habitat mission, we have called on several long time staff members to transition to new roles that involve new work locations and new responsibilities. With these changes, we hope to maximize donations and merchandise management while expanding volunteer involvement at both stores. These changes at the stores have been implemented with a great deal of thought and concern for our staff.

We’ve undergone this staffing transition to not only utilize individual staff members’ strengths but to also focus on the need for an increase of return on investment at both Home Stores.

One significant change is that a new position has been created at both Home Store and Home Store Too with the title of Volunteer Manager. Two of our veteran staff members, Monica Berry and Howard Alston have been called upon to perform this important role. Over the past year Monica has developed this valuable role at Home Store to include managing many aspects of volunteerism from helping our hard working ladies in the backroom to working with community service participants. In this restructure Monica is remaining at Home Store to continue to focus on volunteerism, sales and donations. Howard has transitioned to Home Store Too where he too will be focusing on volunteerism. As Home Store Too’s Volunteer Manager we’ve called upon Howard to step outside of his previous role of operational manager to help Home Store Too achieve a high level of success.

Mike Breedlove has taken on the position of Home Store Operational Manager and Dan Pressler has taken on the duties of Home Store Too Operational Manager. These two gentlemen have worked with us for awhile now and are bringing with them management experience, positive energy and many ideas for growth of the Home Stores.

Damian Munn, previously the acting manager of Home Store Too, will continue to perform the job of scheduling donation pick-ups and will begin to focus on internet marketing and sales including eBay, Craigslist, etc. Lorrie Wall will be focusing her time and energy helping Home Store and Home Store Too with daily operations as well as working with our donation truck crew.

I realize that these changes affect not only our staff, but our volunteers and customers as well. As always, thank you for your support, hard work and long hours. We are doing some great work together and truly making a difference in the lives of families in need in Chatham County.

  1. Personally I’ve seen positive changes since this “transformation” took over. Home Store and Home Store Too seem to have taken a positive twist. Instead of the catty gossip laden store Im used to ignoring the voices as I wandered in, its now turned to being greeted and aked if I need help. Notably the demeanor is upbeat and the prices a bit more down to earth. I know it’s all about helping the community however the prices were outrageous. Now a bit more reasonable, I find a “treasure” with every visit. Keep it up guys/gals!
