Subject: A sad month in PBO – Goodbye Archie
January is turning out to be a very sad month for downtown Pittsboro. Pam Smith and family did business at Beggars & Choosers for 32 years until earlier this month when they closed the store. Pittsboro Appliance is closing at the end of the month after 27 years of service to our town and beyond. I just spoke with Archie who runs the place. He said that yesterday he delivered his last washer and dryer.
I will miss Archie and Pittsboro Appliance. Archie’s recognition of Randy and I as loyal local customers cannot be duplicated. We’ve purchased several new and used appliances over the course of several years from Pittsboro Appliance and encouraged others to do so as well. We were always secure in the knowledge that Archie would back up his product and his work. Archie has given us free oven knobs when they went missing and provided free, personal and amazingly accurate tech support over the phone when some mechanical doo-hitchie just wasn’t working right. When the repair was more that we could handle by phone, he sent out smart, professional technicians who fixed it right the first time or explained when we’d be better off spending our money on something else. Sometimes they just told us to put tape on it and called it done. Works for me!
When people asked for recommendations for purchasing or repairing an appliance on this Chatlist, frequently Archie’s name and that of Pittsboro Appliance were recommended with hail and hearty huzzahs. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough to keep him in business. Goodbye Archie. Thanks for all you did for us. I’ll miss you and the store so much!
