Dear Kerry,

There is a small deer called a “muntjac” that is a likely candidate. They are often kept as a pet here in the US. They are a common species in zoos as well. Muntjac are very small deer as you describe and can be fairly tame with patience which is why some people like to make pets out of them.  They are also called “barking deer” because they emit a sound much like a little barking dog. The males of this species do have small antlers.

Hope this solves your mystery.

Jeannette

Sure sounds like a Jackalope to me.

Has anyone in the Russells Chapel Road area seen anything that looks like
deer but are only a foot or so tall? My husband has seen them in the road
and I thought he was nuts until I saw two in a neighbors field and one of
them had a rack of antlers just like a buck but was about as tall as our
hubcap! I emailed the DNR and they say there is no news of drawf deer but
someone may have been raising miniatures on a farm and some got out. Does
anyone know of such a farm?
