Subject: A PLEA FOR THE DEER WHO CALL PITTSBORO HOME

I have just received a ridiculous ?piece of mail from the Town Manager about opening up the Town of Pittsboro to hunting.? Under the section Urban Archery Season in the notice sent to residents the Town Manager?mentions that this is in response to citizens concerns.? What I would like to know is what citizens.? It seems to me that this whole concept was?spearheaded by Commissioners? Brooks and Harrington and maybe some citizens who complained about their precious flower gardens.? It seems to me that this approval to have hunting in town was signed, sealed and delivered with no input from residents beforehand.? Very underhanded to say the?least!?

The most interesting thing that I got out of the section in the notice is “Hunters will not be permitted to attempt long-range shots because the impact of the arrow is uncertain”.? Hello? It seems to me I see a accident waiting to happen.? I hope the town’s attorney is ready for any liability lawsuits in case someone gets hurt namely a child.

Deer have been demonized and vilified and used as?scapegoats for all the woes of those who want to eradicate them.
?
Using scare tactics like?Lyme Disease simply does not work because there are other hosts that carry ticks.? Ticks do?not pick and choose which host they prefer.? Ticks reside on birds and all mammals so you won’t stop the spread of?Lyme Disease unless of course you want to kill everything. ? Deer car collisions?can be?reduced?very easily by installing reflectors on the roads.? Deer resistent plants can be used to curtail the deer from eating them.? Why do?we always have to go to lethal means.

To have hunting in town is simply unconscionable and very dangerous.? I also feel that our police have enough problems on their hands like crime?to deal with and should not have to be dealing with this ridiculous concept of hunting in town and worrying whether someone is going to get hurt.

Deer are quite capable of controlling their own populations in balance with their food supply.? They have?no need to?venture beyond their natural habitat unless this balance is disturbed.? When?construction destroy their resources, they must find other means to survive.? Deer cross highways in search of food – traffic accidents?are a problem that we have created.?

The only real solution is to respect deer and their habitat, so that they can thrive within it.
I love watching the deer and so do my children.

The concept of hunting in town really disturbs me.?I want to know does it disturb anyone else?

I am not going to get into the argument about hunting vs. non hunting.? I understand that there are many people that have hunting as a tradition in their families.? And, I have spoken to?some hunters who think this concept of hunting in town?is crazy and not safe.
?
What I am saying is that it doesn’t belong in town period because it is too dangerous.?

This?post is a plea for the deer who call the Town of Pittsboro home.? Feel for the deer,?who will come to ruination by such an unnatural and unkind death. Feel for these poor creatures, and then with an armed conscience, act and call the Town Manager at 542-4621 to call a halt to prevent hunting in the Town of Pittsboro.

The power to break this cruelty will be born in our hearts. I know that there are many people in Pittsboro who care and, yes, even dare love deer. If we all but stood and let it be known…
