Does someone program the town clock’s chimes? As I was leaving the General Store in the rain at noon on Saturday, “raindrops keep falling on my head” was playing and “singing in the rain” began as I drove off. Are the bells coordinated with weather reports or was this a joyful coincidence?
Having the rainy day music as I drove around the courthouse circle where my mother and I protested Bush’s war back in 2003, I had the cheerful thought the war may wind down by 2010! It was a reason to be be thankful and to have a sound track to match the day as I did my chore in town was pretty special. As they say “Lucky we live Hawaii” in paradise, so “lucky we live Chatham County”–it’s more than a geographical location but a state of being. Amidst all the doom and gloom news these days, there are cheerful things to brighten the day if we look for them.
I am glad our county commissioners would rather spend money on schools than jails for illegal immigrants. Despite property values assessed for market value sales from 2005, according to the article the tax office sent out to answer questions, when our property may have fallen from those prices today due to the economic downturn, we still live in a pretty beautiful county and I’d rather my taxes went for education. We have elected officials whose priorities may be more in line with kindness than mean-spiritedness, and I applaud Lucier and the others for not getting into a hate-based debate on ICE.
