Larry’s Famous Cheesecake & Bakery

Our Story…

From the young age of twelve Larry had his first taste of cooking through the BSA. He has been at home in the kitchen or outside near a campfire cooking ever since. His love of cooking began early on in Troop 702 out of Reading, Massachusetts where he met all his cooking requirements, received his cooking Merit Badge and by the age of fourteen was cooking for seventy boys scouts and fifteen adult men at their weekend camp outs.

Larry’s love of cooking has continued through the years working in many restaurants throughout New England and includes many different cuisines such as Chinese, Italian, Greek and International. Larry attended a culinary school in the Boston area and was taught in French Traditional Cuisine. He has over 35 years of culinary experience including three years at the Hanscom Officers Club, three years as the in-house chef at Wesleyan University in Connecticut where he became an honorary member of the DKE fraternity, worked as manager of Horowitz Delicatessen in Cary and has been with the Chapel Hill/Carrboro School system as a Dietary Manager for the past seven years.

Since living in North Carolina he has gone back to school and received his CDM (Certified Dietary Manager) and his CFPP (Certified Food Protection Professional) credentials from Wake Tech. You could say that he has a passion for cooking that has lasted his whole life.

Larry and Karen have known each other all their lives, their families lived only two blocks away from each other. In 1983 they became best friends and have been together ever since. They have been married for twenty four years and have one son, Larry Jr. Larry has taught Karen everything she knows about cooking and baking and they love being in the kitchen working together. All of their blessings have been through the grace of God and they are very thankful.

Our dream is to open a small bakery in Pittsboro in 2009. Currently still working out of their in-home bakery, they are selling cheesecakes at four farmer’s markets, five restaurants, one Bed and Breakfast and many, many individuals.

Update as of November 2008… We are moving forward in our plans to open a small bakery in Pittsboro. We have had a positive set back with the where it will be. Instead of having the bakery inside the house and our dining room being the retail space, it has now been decided that it will be best due to building code requirements of four hour fire walls that we move the business into the existing two car garage. We are currently in the process of designing the plans to transform the garage into our bakery. We are very excited about this change. Unfortunately, it means that we will not be open to the public for a few more months. The initial plans and design layout are down on paper and are currently with our contractors. When they are finished we move forward and submit to the town for approval. Then we make changes, cost everything out – cry a little bit and then raise more money.

Due to the holiday season and this being our busiest time of year we would find it impossible to build a bakery and crank out many cheesecakes at the same time. Our estimated time to open has been pushed back until February/March of 2009. We ask for your prayers as we look forward to opening our dream of a small bakery.

We want to say thank you to all of our friends who have helped us get this far through taste testing and sampling. We look forward to opening our doors in the near future so that we can become one of Chatham Counties tasty spots.
