Subject: Looking for pumpkins
Regarding the post about pumpkins, there is a great family-run farm just across the Chatham County line in Lee County where they grow an interesting variety of pumpkins and gourds. They also offer pick-your-own greens (collards, mustard, and turnips), which are only $5 for a 5-gallon bucket full.
I take my kids there every year not just because it is more fun to buy directly from the farm but also because the pumpkins have such personality. They come in orange as well as orange with purple streaks & speckles and in all shapes and sizes – not just the perfectly round & orange. Prices range from $1 for a pretty decent size up to $10 for the whoppers.. Most sell for $3-$5. Yesterday they were also selling green peppers, sweet potatoes, and straw bales.
They are open 7 days a week from 8 am until dark. Call Wayne Yarborough at (919) 770-6651 or 498-5501 for official directions. (From Pittsboro, take the Pittsboro-Moncure Road until you come to a T-intersection; turn right on Old U.S. 1, then left on Lower Moncure Road, and left (I’m pretty sure) on Lower River Road. You’ll see the farm on the corner of Lower River Road and Avent Ferry Road. You may want to call to confirm these directions or look at a map! About a 15-20 minute drive from Pittsboro.)
