Subject: Grand Trees of Chatham meeting

Chatham Chatlisters,

A group of interested citizens, calling ourselves The Grand Trees of Chatham, is organizing a tree recognition program for Chatham County. We will be having an organizational meeting Wednesday July 30 at 7 p.m. in the Agriculture Building auditorium in Pittsboro.

We are about recognizing the most significant trees in the county and Chatham is a very large county. Most communities have some sort of tree recognition program for the special trees or groups of trees in their communities. Many towns in North Carolina are “Tree Cities USA” http://www.dfr.state.nc.us/urban/urban_treecityusa.htm Chatham does not have a Tree City.

Ultimately, our group will award certificates and plaques for Champion (75% of the size of the national champion), Historic (it has to be documented), Landmark (like the old holly in front of the general store cafe), and Meritorious (a special category that can be out of the ordinary for their size, species, or location as individuals or groups of trees). It is possible for one tree to be in more than one category.

We need tree experts, people who can go out and identify, measure, and add these trees to a database.
We want to start having people submit photographs of their special trees, a brief description of the tree(s), and the location if they wish when we establish a website.

We eventually want to hold workshops on how to plant, prune, and take care of trees.

If you care about recognizing the special trees in your neighborhood, come on July 30 and meet like-minded citizens.

Everybody loves a good shade tree.

Thanks,
Walton Haywood
