Subject: Is a new sign ordinance needed?
While I am sure that most Chatham people are as annoyed as I am with
calls made with automatic dialers, bombardments with TV ads and signs
on the corners, we must still be thankful that we still have our
political process in tact in Chatham County, whereas several locations
in the country in the last two presidential elections obviously did not.
With one of the zoning people admitting to removing campaign signs that
did not comply with the 1980 sign ordinance, it is time for the County
Commissioners to rethink this ordinance, as people erecting signs for
their candidate aren’t always familiar with this ordinance, and we can
all tolerate this abuse of our scenery for a few days at election time.
We also don’t know when some common sense challenged person will be
selective on which candidate’s signs are removed.
It would be appropriate to consider a change to the ordinance prior to the next election.
